Fixing the 'Item Not Available' Error on Your Squarespace Store

If you’ve encountered the problem of not being able to add a product to your cart on your website, accompanied by the error message, "Unable to add item. That item is not available," you’re not alone. This issue can be frustrating, but the good news is that there’s often a simple solution: ensuring your Store Page is enabled. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through a possible fix for this error and share some troubleshooting steps to get your Squarespace store up and running smoothly.

Step 1: Confirm You’re on the Correct Squarespace Plan

To sell products or subscriptions on Squarespace, you must be on a plan that supports e-commerce functionality. Here’s how to check your current plan and verify it’s suitable for selling:

  1. Log in to Your Squarespace Account.

  2. Go to Settings > Billing & Account > Billing to see your current plan.

The following Squarespace plans support e-commerce:

  • Business Plan: Allows for basic product selling but charges a 3% transaction fee.

  • Basic Commerce or Advanced Commerce Plans: Ideal for professional stores with no transaction fees and advanced features, such as subscriptions.

If your plan does not include e-commerce capabilities, you’ll need to upgrade. Visit Squarespace's pricing page for detailed comparisons.

Step 2: Ensure Your Store Page Is Enabled

Once you’ve confirmed that your plan supports selling, the next step is to check if your Store Page is enabled. A disabled Store Page prevents products from being available for purchase and triggers the error message.

How to Check and Enable Your Store Page:

  1. Navigate to the Pages section of your Squarespace dashboard.

2. Find the Store Page where your products are listed.

3. Open the setting page for your store page and look for the toggle icon next to ‘Enable Page’. If it’s grayed out, the page is disabled.

4. Click the toggle to enable the Store Page and select Save.

That’s it! Once the page is enabled, your products and subscription plans will become available for purchase.

Our Experience With This Issue

Recently, we ran into this exact problem while setting up subscription products. Despite configuring everything correctly, customers were unable to purchase any of the subscriptions. After double-checking the plan and settings, we discovered the issue: the Store Page was disabled.

The fix was as simple as flipping the toggle back on, and just like that, everything worked perfectly.

Other Tips to Avoid This Error

  1. Ensure Inventory Settings Are Correct: Even for digital or subscription products, it’s good practice to set inventory to unlimited or a high number.

  2. Test in Incognito Mode: Cached data or browser extensions can sometimes interfere with functionality.

  3. Check Payment Processors: Ensure your Stripe or PayPal account is correctly linked.
